If you havn't noticed, Giant Monsters kind of fell out of order in the mid 2000s. Toho opted to Retire Godzilla with Final Wars, and both Gamera and Ultra man films a few years latter failed financially in the box office. Needless to say, my favorite type of b-movie had fallen.
It had until recently. In the last few years giant monsters have made a slow but steady comeback. The South Korean film The Host featured large amphibious monsters invading a city, another SK film Dragon Wars was released in both there country and the US (although it was the first film I wanted to walk out of the theatre on), the amazing Cloverfield 2 years ago, we have Monsters out this month and Tim Burton is adapting the table top game Monsterapcolpyse.
The real big news though is that Lionsgate has bought rites to make another Godzilla film. You heard me, US is getting another shot at this. And this one looks promising, even though it's still really early, it's been confirmed it'll be in 3D, there will be another monster besides Godzilla, maybe 2 and the film makers are aware of the mistakes of the 1998 film. Needles to say, this has a far better chance.
With this increase of Giant Monster movies, there's a good bet that Toho might really start planning a return of there own with Godzilla. They already said they plan to restart the series in 2014; maybe the next US remake will prompt them to go ahead early with it.
If Toho does return to creating Godzilla flicks, you know one thing the fans will want is the return of some beloved monsters from the past. There's some you know they'll use since they're a financial draw, Mothra, Mecha Godzilla, King Ghidorah. Some are more disserving of a return, weather they where stuck in a bad film or despite they're extreme popularity, they've yet to make a return.
So this is my top 10 monsters that need to return.
(Note: If you feel like needing a reference, look up my old Godzilla Articles in the archives section from 2 years ago)
A long necked Dinosaur that spends most of it's time in water. He's only had one film, Terror of Mechagodzilla where it and MG teamed up against Godzilla. The monster is most remembered for having an extremely physical battle with Godzilla. A return would be pleasing to the fan base.
A legged lizard that had it's on film. In it, he was a worshiped as a god by a village. It has the ability to glide and swim. A smaller version appeared in Destroy All Mosnters as well. If Baragon and Kamoebas return (even if they have smaller roles), why can't Varan?
Destroyah - Easily one of the most memorable monsters ever, this creature appeared in the last film of the Heisei series, Godzilla vs Destroyah. Taking on several forms, it gradually grew in size and its final form looked like Lucifer incarnate. I would love to see him back for another smashing.
Yeah, this one gets it partly for sympathy. The only film Gabara has appeared in is All Monsters Attack or Godzilla's Revenge, neither title having any real connection with the plot. Gabara not only has the shame of being in one of the stupidest Godzilla films, but he's also has one of the stupidest storylines. Like all monsters in the film, he's nothing but a figment of a boy's imagination, and he in particular is a monster version of the kid's bully who bullies Minia. Honestly besides a lame horse like laugh, he isn't all that bad of a monster, he has a cool power in which everything he touches he launches electricity into it. I say give him a better roar, a bit of a make over, new origins and keep the powers, he'd be more worthwhile.
Hedorah is one of the most unique monsters to ever be created. In the original film he came into, he quit literally is a creature of pollution, feeding on toxic fumes, crude oil and it's very body is a force of destruction as it'll burn flesh and exhales deadly gas. Needles to say, he was one of Godzilla's most deadly foes in the Showa series as he continually brought pain and agony on him while Godzilla could hardly get him back. Godzilla couldn't attain victory until the humans stepped in that he could be defeated. Hedorah did have a place in Final Wars, but like a lot of monsters not called Godzilla, he got shafted in that film. Hedorah has a unique look, powers and origin; I see no reason for him not to return. Granted him as a pollution monster I could do with out, but a return would still be good.
King Ghidorah is one of the few monsters to appear in all 3 Godzilla eras, plus had a spot outside of Godzilla film in the Mothra Trilogy. However, in his sole Heisei era film, he got an upgrade into Mecha-King Ghidorah. In this version, the main body, middle head and wings are all mechanicalized while the rest of the body is still the living body of the dragon. As said before, the space dragon has appeared in all 3 Godzilla series and even appeared in a film trilogy with out Godzilla, needless to say there's a strong bet to his return if Godzilla films start to return. I think this incarnation of King Ghidorah needs to make a return though, it's more interesting as a half creature, half robot monster (something we've hardly seen). I remember a comic where he and Mechagodzilla teamed together, I can't think of a more fitting duo.
This one my not sound familiar to some, since because he's only appeared in 1 film and that was the last one to be released, Godzilla: Final Wars. In a cast of returning monsters, this is the only original monster to be introduced. After Godzilla has gone through all other monsters, the Xillians launch a comet to earth that Godzilla destroys with his breath, causing its creation. The creature can levitate and launch gravity beams with its eyes, and gave Godzilla a challenge at first. If not for Mothra's assistance, he would have lost. After Monster X was defeated, he turned into a larger more powerful monster, Keizer Ghidorah. Granted King Ghidorah is the most famous 3 headed dragon use, but there have also been 2 others, the mentioned Keizer and Desghidorah in the Mothra trilogy. But honestly I think this early form needs a return, he had a different look compared to other monsters (I think legendary artist HR Giger designed him) and maybe a return he could get a longer fight, unlike all the fights in Final Wars.

This is one that has some scratching there heads easily. The 1998 Godzilla is one of the most bashed films ever, and with good reason. What was once a force of destruction was a speedy nuisance with a minor invasion threat, can you blame G-Fanboys for being angry? Not to mention some clear as day rip offs of T-Rex and Raptors from Jurassic Park. However, I maintain that if they had given Godzilla radioactive breath (his "flammable breath" doesn't fucking count) and at least have him receive some punishment (all it took was a few missiles and he's dead), the fan base would be more forgiving of the design, as evident that animated series that fallowed, which gave him his breath and he received some punishment was actually very popular by Godzilla fans. He did have a part in Final Wars, and like a lot of them he was killed in seconds (although he's one of the few that it works with). I think give him a breath or beam attack, make him more resilient to attacks, and then he'll be a more worthwhile monster to the fan base.
If your looking through Godzilla film descriptions looking for this monster, well don't bother, this monster has never been a movie at all. You heard me. This monster nearly made it into several films over the years, but it never did. And yet this also one of the most well known monsters amongst the die hard fans. Why? Bagan was the final boss for the Super Nintendo game Super Godzilla. In it, Aliens have invaded the earth and Godzilla must fight his way through several enemies. He eventually turns into Super Godzilla, a large more powerful version of him (you can similarities between Super Godzilla and Space Godzilla). After defeating King Ghidorah, the aliens combine Godzilla and King Ghidorah's sells to produce Bagan, the final boss. Like Gabara, this one partly gets it from sympathy. He has a pretty good monster design with a long tail, large sharp shoulders, horns on his head, and a pretty large body frame. I also think he has psychic powers from the game, but don't quote me. Pretty much, give this monster another chance, please!
Despite his popularity, Megalon has only appared in one film, and it's easily one of the most laughed at and hated Godzilla films of all time, Godzilla vs Megalon. Megalon is a god worshiped by an undersea race called the Seatopeans whose lives are distraught by nuclear testing and instead of simply asking them to stop, sends Megalon to raise hell. Using a man like machine called Jet Jaguar to control it, he destroys the surface until the military and Jet Jaguar's makers reclaim it and use it to summon Godzilla. The Seatopians summon Gigan (get to him next) and he teams with Megalon to face Godzilla and Jet Jaguar. At first, the 2 seem to be winning, but then Jet Jaguar and Godzilla make a comeback. After Gigan flees, the 2 pretty much just kick Megalon's ass until he flees. Megalon should have been an imposing beast, he's a beetle that can shoot gravity beams from its head, spit fire balls and has drills for hands. Instead, he's a crying, bumbling good of a monster. Yes the movie can be funny, but the potential for a dangerous beast is there. An improved suit, better design (his drill only works if both hands are together, they should have been individual drills) and if anything, he can put up a fight. Cause seriously, for a god of a hidden civilization that's meant to be vengeance upon mankind, the only impression he left was Godzilla doing a Lucha Libre wrestling drop kick to him, which isn't good for him.
Might as well say it now, the top 3 are easily some of the most popular monsters in the entire franchise. At first glance at the whole monster, Gigan (Showa form at least) is kind of laughable. His appearance is of a Giant Robotic bird, a chicken at best, and that would cause one to chuckle. However, in the movies, he's something you don't want to be close to. Granted, in fighting, Godzilla did get the best of him a good portion of the fights, but at the same time Gigan is deadly on his own. For one he can fly which gives him an advantage right here. The real thing is that his arms and hands are just long sharp blades. Besides being blunt hitting weapons, the tips are sharp enough to draw blood (which he does several times). Then there's his belly which has a saw blade that'll cut through flesh and stone. His Final Wars version is more improved version. His body is thinner, he has an eye laser, his arms shoot grappling hooks along with blades and he can change them for saw blade hands. The only problem with his Final Wars version is, yet again, he gets his ass kicked easily. I mean seriously, Godzilla blows his head off with 1 shot of his atomic breath. I say bring back the Final Wars version and let him put up a better fight then he did in FW.
Oh god did I want to put this one in the #1 spot, yet I thought deeply and decided that the monster below disserved it more. Never the less Biollante is with out question one of the most unique, remembered and loved monsters ever created. Her creation stems from the murdered daughter of a scientist named Erika. He then merged her cells with plants in hopes of keeping her spirit alive. After it begins to die, he agrees to join a project to produce an Anti-Nuclear Energy Bacteria which produces the substance with Godzilla's cells. In doing so, he gets a hold of the cells and merges them with the plants cells in hopes of saving it. This in turn creates Biollante, a rose monster with the cells of the plant, Godzilla and Erika, towering high in the middle of a lake with acid spitting mouthed roots to defend it. Godzilla confronts the plant and after a battle, he ignites it with his atomic breath. It then dissolves into pollen and flies away. Later on, it returns in the form of a more monster looking creature, with large head and mouth filled daggers. It does battle with Godzilla one more time and even though it receives heavy wounds, it also does severe damage to Godzilla itself. It then dissolves again and flees away. I will admit, trying to bring Biollante back would be tricky, but this is a one of a kind monster from a film a lot of fans consider to be there absolute favorite. Weather her origins remain scientific or become supernatural, I don't honestly care, this monster needs another film.
Anguirus is with out question one of the most loved monsters Toho has ever created, he even at times is more beloved then Godzilla himself. First off, he's the first monster to do battle with Godzilla in a movie, Godzilla Raids Again. In it, him and Godzilla battle twice, once briefly in the beginning and then in the middle of the film in a dog fight like battle, needles to say it's physical. Godzilla finally kills it by biting his neck then burning him. He wouldn't return for over a decade when Destroy All Monsters was made with several monsters used. In it, he's seen attacking cities and military forces under alien control. After it's broken, the monsters battle King Ghidorah where he takes a harsh beating by KG but still helps out. Its Godzilla vs Gigan and Godzilla vs Mechgodzilla that cemented his love by the fans. In GvG, he helps Godzilla in his fight against Gigan and King Ghidorah, but struggles and takes some harsh beatings. At one point when Godzilla is being attacked by aliens and is about to be killed, he charges head strong into Gigans belly buzzsaw which cuts deep into his shoulder/neck area, that is fucking ballsy. In GvMG, he discovers Mechgodzilla disguised as Godzilla and battles, but again is beaten badly. He even has his mouth ripped open badly (ala King Kong and T-Rex). To put it simply, Anguirus isn't the greatest fighter, but if there was ever a monster that symbolized "Never say Die", he's it and we fucking love him for it. He was heavily considered to return in the Heisei series, but they passed up on it and he wouldn't return until Final Wars. And again, he got his ass kicked easily; you see why I don't like Final Wars? But here it is, Anguirus to me is the one monster that disserves to return to the Godzilla franchise when it finally starts again.
So here it is, the list of monsters that when (I'm not saying if cause I know Toho will someday) Godzilla once again starts popping up on the silver screen. Thank you, and one more thing, Happy Two Year Anniversary to me here on BthroughZ!
