I said it once and I'll say it again, 'Goddamn, I love this magazine'. We at BthroughZ do this for free so one of the perks is the free stuff we get for review. It's things like Lunchmeat that make it all worthwhile. This baby is awesome.
This zine deals exclusively with movies that were released only on video tape. It's exhaustive in it's coverage and obviously a labor of love. These folks obviously embrace their obsession and it shows in their product. It's beautifully designed and made with quality.
First lets talk about the design. It's got a beautiful full-color cover and it's packed to the gills with pictures. Each review, of which there's almost two dozen, comes with a high quality scan of the cover to help satisfy all your retro-technology needs. The text and layout are completely cut and paste in look and feel and will melt the hearts of all you DIY lovers.
Review wise, it runs the gamut. Covering everything from Hanna-Barbera's 'Monster In My Pocket' to the Austrailian monster pig movie 'Razorback', no stone is left unturned. Besides the requisite horror movie reviews you'll also find exploitation treats like 'Who Killed Teddy Bear?' and 'The Muthers' and classic trash like 'I Was A Teenage Frankenstein'. Treasures from every decade from the 1950s to the 1990s are unearthed and brought to light for your entertainment.
Finally, I've got to say something about the quality of material that actually makes up the zine. Printed on thick paper (it almost feels like card stock) this publication was made to go the distance. It was durable enough to survive a "reading" by a one year old son. A feat unto itself.
Whether you're a horror completist/obsessive or a lover of cool indie mags you should definately pick this up. The first issue completely sold out so get it while you can. You can pick up a copy either on EBAY or at myspace.com/lunchmeatzine.
